ebook

The ten Americans profiled in this book may not be familiar to some people, but their inventions certainly are. Today, we take for granted devises such as televisions, microchips, laswers, and even the Super Soaker® water gun. Within the last one hundred years in the United States, creative individuals such as those introduced in this book have pushed technology beyond the dreams of just a few years ago. Each of these inventors began with an idea for improving some aspect of life. Through ingenuity, hard work, and talent, they made their ideas a reality. Includes profiles of William Lear, Philo Farnsworth, Beatrice Kenner, Gertrude Belle Elion, Gordon Gould, Charles Ginsburg, Robert Shurney, Jack Kilby, Stephanie Kwolek and Lonnie Johnson.

Gr 7 Up-Both Inventors and Computer Geniuses go beyond the standard entries. Yes, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs make appearances, but so do Grace Hopper, one of the first computer programmers, and Gordon Gould, inventor of the laser. Though containing just a few black-and-white images, the books include detailed citations, allowing for further research. Daredevil covers familiar territory, with chapters on Neil Armstrong, Amelia Earhart, the Wright Brothers, and other explorers, astronauts, and pilots, without introducing new material. The first two books are the stronger purchases.-Sarah Knutson, American Canyon Middle School, CA

These revised editions of books originally published as part of the Collective Biographies series provide surveys of pioneers in various fields (computers, the arts, exploration, etc.). Each volume contains ten biographical profiles, illustrated with black-and-white photographs. The writing can be flat, but the profiles will serve as adequate starting points for those doing basic research. Reading list, websites. Ind.
