　　《百万英镑》收入本集子的作品，如《卡拉维拉斯县驰名的跳蛙》、《竞选州长》、《百万英镑》、《我最近辞职的事实经过》、《三万元的遗产》、《败坏了赫德莱堡的人》等，都是马克。吐温中、短篇小说中的代表作。值得一提的是《加利福尼亚人的故事》一文。它是最早介绍到我国的马克·吐温的小说，1906年发表在《绣像小说》第七十期上，题为《山家奇遇》，系从日文转译。当时马克·吐温还在世。译者吴祷选译这篇小说，若非偶然，定是慧眼独具。
